Honneth and His Reading of Hegel’s System of Ethical Life: A Criticism

Abstract
The purpose Axel Honneth’s Struggle for recognition is to put forward the moral basis of interaction in human conflicts. With this objective Honneth examines Hegel’s early writing System of Ethical Life. Hegel, according to Honneth, enriches the Fichtean model of recognition with Hobbes’ social philosophy. In this context, the influence of Schelling seems to be secondary. Yet, a closer look into the context of Hegel’s development of the System of Ethical Life allows us to see that things are different. Our thesis is that Honneth ignoring the influence of Schelling in Hegel prevents us from properly grasping the internal economy of the theory of recognition mobilized by the System of Ethical Life.
