Abstract
Although it is not found in the “canonical” version of The Work of Art in the Age of its Mechanical Reproduction, and it does not have a significant presence in other writings by W. Benjamin, the concept of innervation constitutes a decisive element of his philosophy. The concept is not only decisive because it allows us to clear up important misunderstandings about his aesthetics, but also because it clarifies the access to his “medial theory”, and this, in turn, allows us to demarcate with precision the status that the works of Fourier, Scheerbart and Jünger acquire in his thought, and how, through them, the ideas expressed in the essay of 1935-36 are linked to those developed in the essay On the Concept of History. The objective of the present research is to study the genesis and the importance of the concept.
